Overview of Music Statistics: Conclusions

19 December 2011

Stats logo

The fourth and last of this series of major articles on statistical requirements for the music sector contains a research program for 2012. While presented as an article in the knowledge base now, frequent revisions are expected as the statistical program is refined; we sincerely hope with suggestions from readers.

The fourth article, dealing with non-ABS sources, was completed in February 2012.

Brian Arthur and the "Second Economy"

11 November 2011

Logo mapping.jpg

A recent paper in the McKinsey Quarterly analyses the profound implications for the future economy as "digitization is creating a second economy that’s vast, automatic, and invisible – thereby bringing the biggest change since the Industrial Revolution." Brian Arthur is the author of the seminal 2009 book on The Nature of Technology but this paper goes far beyond this. The second economy may outgrow the familiar physical economy within two or three decades, potentially leading to greater prosperity but vastly different employment conditions. How can companies and societies best plan for such a radical transformation of our traditional economic foundations? What are the pros and cons for a sector like music, and culture generally?

This article has been followed up shortly by an update of the note on The Nature of Music Sector Technology as shown in the previous item. We invite comments and constructive contributions on the opportunities and threats to music associated with these medium- to long-term developments.

Overview of Music Statistics: ABS

2 November 2011

Stats logo

This major article was progressively written directly into the knowledge base from mid-September 2011. It describes the music-related statistics that are currently available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (with more detail available or being developed in other articles). The next article in this series, Overview of Music Statistics: Other Sources, is due for completion in February 2012. A final article, Overview of Music Statistics: Conclusions, discusses what is still missing to complete a proper statistical picture of the Australian music sector.

This is a major initiative within the Knowledge Base aiming at producing the most complete framework of available music sector statistics in Australia.

This Overview originally contained descriptions of nine subject areas which made it unduly lengthy. From 10 February 2012, the nine subject areas appear as separate articles dated between September and October 2011. These articles (and others relating to other sources) are marked by a smaller version of the logo shown to the left.

Comments are requested on possible other sources and how to fill major gaps in the music sector database.

Overview of Music Statistics: Introduction

27 October 2011

Stats logo

As noted above under Overview of Music Statistics: ABS, a major statistical review of the music sector was undertaken in September 2011. There will be four acticles, of which the current introduction is to all intents and purposes final. The initial version of the second article on statistics available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is now complete. The two final articles (Overview of Music Statistics: Other Sources and Overview of Music Statistics: Conclusions) will be progressed as far as possible by the end of December.

Again, we urge everyone to comment, especially on sources other than ABS.

24 October 2011

Logo Issues.jpg

"Australia's performing arts provide performance opportunities, training, and avenues for people to engage with heritage and culture. A culture that includes equity and diversity principles in music and other performing arts can improve capability and generate new ways of providing equal opportunities for all people to participate -- including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from diverse cultural backgrounds, people with a disability, age and gender balance."

Note on Music Libraries and Librarians

19 October 2011

Logo Notes.jpg

Inviting contributions that demonstrate the importance of specialised music librarians and how widespread they are. The note tentatively distinguishes four groups: The National Library of Australia, State libraries, music libraries in universities and conservatoria, and an "other" group which includes the Australian Music Centre (see AMC, the Art Music Composers Organisation) and looks for knowledge of the role of music librarians in local public libraries. There is currently no reference to music libraries and librarians in the knowledge base.

The Nature of Music Sector Technology

10 October 2011, updated and extended 12 November 2011

Logo Notes.jpg

The Nature of Technology summarises W. Brian Arthur's important 2009 book of that title. The beginning of the summary invites a paper for the knowledge base on how it applies to the music sector. Meanwhile, Brian Arthur has taken the technology issue dramatically further in a recent paper described in Brian Arthur and the "Second Economy". We hope several people will take up the challenge to show how these potentially far-reaching developments may help or hinder the music sector.

The Nature of Technology

23 August 2011

Logo mapping.jpg

"Technology is such a central feature of the music sector that it is appropriate to describe a recent theory of how it works. Much of what is described below in a general context also applies to the music sector. Readers are invited to reflect on this and respond with their comments. Maybe there is a case for a specific article on "the nature of music sector technology"?"

W. Brian Arthur’s The Nature of Technology "is important for understanding how technologies develop, and therefore how future technologies may emerge. This article encapsulates his thesis."

The Music Sector

22 August 2011

Logo mapping.jpg

"The Music Council’s knowledge base goes beyond the conventionally defined music industry, which basically puts the recording industry at the centre. The knowledge base puts creators (composers, songwriters and performers) in the central position and incorporates a wide range of infrastructure and activities which were left out of the framework surrounding the recording industry."

Two charts illustrate the extent of the sector.
