Introduction

There is an unusually large number of music people receiving high Australian Honours Awards (AO).

We are especially pleased to note that two of our Music Trust people have received awards.

Deborah Cheetham was awarded an AO. Deborah is an indigenous opera singer, composer and director. Her most recent opera, Pecan Summer, is about to get a second airing, this time in Adelaide, with an indigenous case largely trained by Deborah.

Mal Hewitt is an important member of the Music Trust’s Music Education Advocacy Taskforce. Mal has also chaired Friends of the ABC and set up an organisation for older specialist music teachers to get appropriate recognition for their skills and contribution: the Collegiate of Specialist Music Educators. Mal received an OAM.
